Reduce Stress by Getting Some Sleep!

Even someone as high performing as me – ‘the radical mentor,’ ‘The Energizer Bunny,’ and the person who everyone thinks runs on fumes – I GET MY SLEEP!

It doesn’t matter what you read, what you hear or what your body really tells you; everyone needs a good 6-8 hours of sleep a night.  But during the busy holiday schedule when so many people are trying to tie up loose ends, manage family, friends and parties, one can forget to get in their beauty rest.

My first rule is to not watch TV in bed or let that phone/technology keep me up.  You need to put your phone on night mode, turn off the distractions and go to sleep.  Recently I have been working hard at getting in my required sleep.  With my schedule traveling through so many time zones, one would think I would really have a hard time falling asleep and getting up refreshed.  Not a problem.  I go to bed around the same time every night regardless of where I am.  I have found that when I get the 6-8 hours of good sleep I can get up so much earlier feeling like I am ready to take on the world.

Years ago this was not the case.  I would not go to bed until after midnight, read through emails and social media on my mobile phone and watch TV until I fell asleep.  I always had a hard time waking up without an alarm.  Today, I literally wake up about 5 minutes before my alarm - not even wanting to hit the snooze button.

What’s changed?  I still eat great dinners at night, have a cocktail, travel like crazy, sleep in different hotel beds in different time zones but I don’t lay in my bed and continue reading every email that has come in past 10:00pm.  Enough said.  I have always heard that you need to turn off the technology at night – I now believe it.

After all, who likes to brag about sleeping with their ‘phone.’!
