Whether it is work, friendship, love or time - it seems that the more you do, the more you need to do. Years ago I read the book The Way We're Working Isn't Working and I believe that we need to step back and take a good look at our time management, the energy we put into bad relationships, and the real positive meaning of life. I know that sounds somewhat deep - but think about it. High performers need to be constantly fueled by enthusiasm, energy and positive surroundings. The more we drain each other the harder it is to keep re-fueling. My thought is to really look at what you want and how you are going to get it. I am still a firm believer in hard work, security of success and feeling significant in every part of your life, but it must be YOUR life.
As I watch the turbulent news of the world right now and listen to people debate over what needs to be done, how to do it and how to solve every problem immediately, I continue to remind myself and others around me that it is so important to take personal responsibility first and then you can help others. This is no different than when I am on an airplane - 'remember to first put your oxygen mask on and then help others around you.'
No matter how much value you produce today, whether it is in dollars, sales, revenue, profit or time - it's never enough. We have to run faster, work longer and fight harder to win the next deal. If you don't give thought to your focus, your goals and your dreams, this race will never be won. You will have less energy at home, less sleep and then less productivity at work. Remember that you are in charge - you are responsible and this is YOUR LIFE and YOUR RACE. You will have all the money and time you need to survive and thrive if you first take care of your spirit and your energy. Change happens so fast you don't even see it coming. I am posting a picture of myself looking out of one of the windows on the Great Wall last week. I stood there in amazement as I recalled these facts ::
Rather than being one long continuous wall, the Great Wall of China is made up of a number of different sections. These sections were built by various dynasties over a long period of time from stone and other materials.
Its main purpose was protection against attacks and invasions from the north.
The Great Wall of China stretches around (3915 miles) in length. If you measure the length of all the different sections of wall, the distance is more like (13670 miles).
The Great Wall of China is the longest structure ever built by humans.
People all over the world go and walk on this wall and how often do they really think about how long it took to build it and what monumental change all these people went through to now have one of the greatest wonders of the world to visit? It started with a plan, a dream, a vision and a goal and I can only imagine it was not easy and took a lot of hard work - never enough time, supplies or men. Remember to be present everyday because you can't change what you don't see!
